Affiliate Program Management Questions and
Answers |
|
1. How long does it take to start a new affiliate program?
With our affiliate program management services, it takes from 2 to 6
weeks depending on the technical implementation and how many
features you want to add to your site (coupon codes, custom landing
pages, etc.)
2. How are conversions tracked for affiliate programs?
Conversion tracking code is placed on your sign-up confirmation
page or your shopping cart confirmation pages (or both). It takes
most web development teams less than 30 minutes to place the
tracking pixels on the appropriate web pages. Some affiliate
networks also require code to be placed on the landing pages as
well.
3. How fast can I expect my affiliate program to start
generating sales?
You can see your first sale come through in as quick as 24 hours.
The rest of it depends on how well your brand name is known, your
commission payouts (competitive), quality of your banners and text
links, landing page conversion rates, the uniqueness of your product
or service and other key factors.
4. What is the best way to get affiliates to sign-up to my
affiliate program?
First, you need to make sure you have a profitable proposition
for affiliates. Your commission payout needs to be competitive, but
also is enough to make it profitable for your affiliate. Also, you
need to have sales materials ready for your affiliates to use to
promote your product or service. Just like a job interview, you have
only one time to make a good first impression. Affiliates will test
your program, and if it isn't profitable, or doesn't make as much
money for them as your competition, they are gone forever, even if
you make improvements later. There are at least 12 new affiliate
programs launching every business day, so they will continue to test
new ones, and they just remember they already tested the affiliate
programs that didn't perform. Once you have a great affiliate
program, the best way to recruit them is to use an affiliate network
(unless you have a full time team to recruit them directly), use the
recruitment tools provided by the network, use a company like ours
that has direct contacts with affiliates, and offer the super
affiliates a higher payout than what is published to the regular
affiliates.
5. How can I find out what my competitor's are paying in
commissions in their affiliate programs?
Create a "dummy" affiliate account in each of the networks,
Commission Junction, LinkShare, etc., then look at their published
commission payouts. If you use a Yahoo, Hotmail, or Gmail email
account, you can even sign-up to see what their welcome email looks
like.
6. How can I prevent fraud?
There are several techniques. First, set your affiliate program
to manual approval so you can review each application. Avoid
affiliates from countries known to cause mainly fraudulent traffic.
If your transactions are for the U.S. only because you ship only to
the U.S. (for example), be sure each affiliate has a website (or SEM
campaigns) targeted to U.S. customers only. Also, we monitor your
affiliate program reports for suspicious activities.
7. What should I do before I launch an affiliate program?
Make sure your website can handle the extra traffic, be sure to
reserve misspellings and variations of your domain name (you should
do this anyway, with or without an affiliate program since your
competitor's affiliates might grab these domains to promote your
competitor's products), analyze the CPA of your other sources for
customers (Google Adwords, Yahoo Search, etc.).
8. Who handles the W-9 / 1099 affiliate tax records?
If you launch your affiliate program on an affiliate network like
Commission Junction or LinkShare, they handle it. Otherwise, you
will need to have your internal accounting department keep track of
every affiliates SSN or EIN and report the amounts paid to the IRS
just as you would a consultant via 1099. Or, you can hire an
affiliate check writing service to do this as well.
9. How can I track the quality of the traffic I am getting
from my affiliate program?
You can pass the network and/or affiliate identification number
from the URL into your internal database, tied to the customer or
registration number created during the transaction. You can then run
reports against this new field to determine repeat purchases, tell a
friend, site usage, pageviews, or any other criteria your database
stores. You should do this as well for
Google
Adwords,
Yahoo
Search, etc. so you can then compare the TRUE quality and value
of your traffic.
10. Should I hire an affiliate manager to manage my affiliate
program or should I find a consultant?
There are pros and cons to both. A consultant can bring in years
of experience from managing affiliate programs across multiple
industries, bringing in new ideas you may not of though of. We can
launch and manage your affiliate program or we can launch, manage
the first few months and transition it internally to your affiliate
program manager. Just make sure they have enough time available on
their plate to handle the extra work load.
11. Are coupon codes really that important?
Yes! Very much so. Without coupon codes, you won't get on the
100s of high volume coupon sites, like
couponmountain.com,
couponcabin.com, and
many
others. Plus, many of these coupon websites pull in coupon codes
automatically from coupon code data feeds. This is an easy way to
place your coupon code once, to get on 100s of affiliate websites.
12. How long have you been managing affiliate programs?
Since 1997. Internet Marketing since 1994.

Affiliate Program Terms and Definitions /
Glossary |
|
Affiliate, Publisher, Partner
These terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Some affiliate
networks use the term publishers and some use affiliates. Partners
usually deal directly with the advertiser (or merchant) versus
through an affiliate network. There are some affiliates that have
websites, some use SEM like Google Adwords to promote your products
and services, some have great SEO and are monetizing their traffic
via affiliate programs (and usually a combination of Google Adsense
ads too). Some affiliates have combinations of many different
methods to get traffic. Advertiser, Merchant
These are the same terms. These are the companies that pay
affiliates based on sales and / or leads.
EPC
Earnings Per Click. In the case of
Commission Junction (CJ), it means Earnings Per 100 Clicks. CJ uses
this to rate both the advertiser program and the publisher
(affiliate) performance.
Pay Per Click (PPC), Pay Per Lead (PPL), Pay Per Sale (PPS)
Most affiliate networks pay out on leads and sales. Some of them
used to PPC as well. A lead can be a newsletter sign-up,
registration, or other trial. Sales are associated with the use of a
credit card.
Affiliate Program Directory
There are several websites that list
affiliate programs, some have forums so affiliates can discuss
the programs amongst themselves as well.
Recurring Commissions / Residual Commissions
When an affiliate gets additional commissions on follow up sales
from the same initial customer they recommended.
Charge Back / Chargeback
When a commission is revoked from an affiliate due to violation
of program terms, a customer returns a product or cancels a service.
Payment Threshold
A minimum amount of commissions that must be earned to justify
the mailing of a payment check to the affiliate. This is usually set
to $50 or $100 per month, but can vary.
Affiliate Manager
A person who manages the day to day activities and tasks that
revolves around an affiliate program. This includes a combination of
proactive and reactive tasks necessary to grow your affiliate
program.
Bounce Rate
A bounce rate is determined by dividing the amount of visits to a
landing page by the amount of people who didn't proceed or click
anywhere on the landing page. In other words, they either hit the
back button, closed the browser, or typed in a different web address
/ URL. This is part of optimizing your affiliate program
performance.
ROI - Return On Investment
The calculation of all of your expenses used to acquire a given
customer. ROI is used to analyze and optimize your affiliate
marketing program.
Search Widget
These are small applications placed on the affiliate's website
that will collect key values and pass them to the merchant's
website, such as flight information, dating criteria, search
criteria, etc.
Super Affiliates
These are affiliates that are in the top percentage based on
earnings. Many use SEM (Google Adwords, etc.) some have websites
that get traffic through either SEO / organic search results or via
their own inbound PPC campaigns.
Private Label
When the merchant / advertiser provides a template system that
allows the affiliate to insert their name so it is labeled as the
brand of the affiliate. This is a good way to build affiliate
loyalty and commitment.
Geo Targeting
The use of tools that help target ads to specific country, state,
city and even zip codes. This can drastically increase the
conversion rates and the EPC for your affiliate program.
